A grilled meal and an adult beverage can be a good combination. Standing outside as the smoke bellows from the grill on a warm summer day makes that malty beverage quite refreshing. The choice of beer can greatly affect the taste of your meal so pairing is important. If you’re like a lot of people and have no clue what beer to pair with your meal, we want to help you out. We’ve paired the perfect style of beer with chicken, beef, fish, and even hot dogs.
Saisons are the perfect pairing for chicken with their lush malty/yeasty mouth feel. They stand up to the chicken’s rich textures as the sweet malt and herbal hops complement the main flavors in the food. They are robust enough to match the flavors of food but still light enough to be refreshing.
Porters pair very well with steak or any beef. The full flavor of a porter is able to compete with the rich texture of a steak from rare to well done.
An American Pale Ale goes great with fish. Use your current favorite or find one that does not hit you with high hops and bitterness. Your chosen pale ale should be lighter in flavor with mild floral and a smooth finish to compliment the milder flavor of the fish.
You can’t go wrong with an IPA (India Pale Ale for any newbies). IPA has a great malt character, is hop forward, finishes dry, and usually ends with a little bite. If you don’t have a favorite IPA, look for one with slight orange notes and a strong finish.
